On Friday, November 15, 2019, Olympic medalist & Pro Boxer Shakur Stevenson, New Jersey Hall of Fame Boxing Coach Wali Moses, along with CEO Robyn Moses were the special guests at the Stevenson Moses Boxing for Life Ringside for a Cause Benefit in Glenridge, NJ.

The purpose of this year’s benefit was to raise the organization’s profile in additional communities and to further spread the message of using the boxing for life lifestyle as a deterrent to gun violence by building character and responsibility.

Event co- chairs this year were , President Stevenson Moses Boxing for Life and Board Member Gregory Burrus. This year’s Ringside for a Cause benefit was hosted by the President of the Junior League Of Montclair-Newark Stephanie Brown in her beautiful appointed Glenridge, NJ home, The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Stevenson Moses Boxing For Life Board Member Gregory Burrus .

2019 Ringside For A Cause opening round reception was catered by the historic Ridgewood Country Club which provided several unique and very tasty culinary delights paired with a number of wines and selective beers. The Ridgewood staff was warm, friendly, very helpful and should be commended for all the services provided during the night.

Guests in attendance mixed, mingled, sampled the culinary delights while they were treated to a video of Coach Walli discussing the path to success Shakur Stevenson Trainer, Wali Moses (Exclusive Full Interview).

It was during this round that guest also had a chance to participate in the Ringside For A Cause Fundraising activities.

MC Gregory Burrus kicked off Round two by thanking everyone for coming out to support SMBFL, provided a quick overview of the nights activities and introduce the Stevenson and Moses Boxing For Life President CC Minton. spoke on the mission of the organization and the healthy lifestyle being promoted to deter gun violence. CC then introduced the organization’s founders New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame Coach Walli Moses and SMBFL CEO Robyn Moses .

New Jersey Hall of Fame Boxing Coach Walli Moses spoke on the path to Olympic glory and beyond, especially what it takes to become a champ. Founder and CEO Robyn Moses spoke on her commitment to the community and belief that education is just as important as the tools that boxing provides to young people.

Honoree Ceremony — Michael Gray

We were honored to have this years community service awards presented to SMBFL selected honorees by Michael Gray, Chief of Staff for Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. and is also the Founder of Save Our Nation’s NonProfit.

The two honorees this year were Tyrone Brooks and Anthony McPhall.

“Mr. Brooks is an asset to the community as an educator and a leader,” said Minton, president of Stevenson and Moses Boxing for Life. “His commitment to the community has been consistent throughout the years’ and we are excited to honor him this year.” You can read about this honoree here.

Anthony has a strong commitment to helping those in need of help throughout our communities. “Anthony McPhall embodies the strength of Stevenson and Moses Boxing our mission,” said CC Minton, President Stevenson and Moses Boxing for Life. “I’m excited to have Anthony as one of our honorees this year!” stated CC Minton. We closed the awards ceremony by thanking Michael Gray for being a supporter and giving us his time and Stephenie Hutton for her philanthropy as host and being a top donor for our 2019 Ringside for a Cause Benefit.

Community Public Support

Throughout the night there were a number of other dignitaries in the audience that were asked to come up and share their vision and mission in the community such as SMBFL Board Member Doug Freeman — President of Weequahic Sports Authority, Celeste Bateman — Community Events Producer at Newark Public Library and Owner Celeste Bateman & Associates LLC and Ricardo Salazar — Vice President Sales & Marketing — Greater Newark Convention and Visitors Bureau. It was clear they continually combined their love for the community with realtime community activism.

Main Event

The main events activities were highlighted by a special appearance by WBO Champion Shakur Stevenson who made history as one of the youngest WBO Champions in the world by winning and securing his title in Reno, NV on October 27, 2019 .

This round further highlighted how the community supported Shakur Stevenson in his journey from the city of Newark to the 2016 Olympics and beyond. A number of folks spoke of the Shakur they know and love and how proud they were of him and his journey.

Shakur spoke on his journey and thanked all for coming out.

Round 3 Ringside for a Cause Benefit

Round 3 of the evening continued with attendees networking with each other, sampling more of the delectable sweets and treats.

A big highlight of the night thanks to the graciousness of Shakur Stevenson and others in attendance, there were lots of photo opportunities .

She is a President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition Community Leadership Award recipient and also works with adults, children, and communities, empowering them to embrace healthy living. Her various projects include working with the Office of First Lady Michelle Obama, Whole Foods Market, NY/NJ Super Bowl organization, Apollo Theater, Olympic Day Committee, and Harlem World Magazine. She has spent her time honing her skills as a brand ambassador, fundraiser, and fitness instructor.
